Sprouting

4:2:15We’ve had lots of sunshine and lots of rain lately, so the seeds I planted a few weeks ago are popping through as seedlings. I love seedlings and the hope that they embody. I have arugula, broccoli raab, radishes, snap peas, lettuces, kale, shelling peas, spinach, and beets peeking through the soil today. My rhubarb is going crazy – I think the more selective pruning I did last year really helped. This is also the busiest time of year for my landscaping business, so when I’ve been staring at plant names and sketches for just a little too long, I love taking 5 minutes to go out into my *own* garden and see what’s going on.

March Planting!

I got the extra soil at Costco on Saturday to top off my beds, so while it was sunny yesterday I got out and spread it all around. For the record though, the organic moisture control Miracle Grow potting mix is very very different from the “regular” moisture control Miracle Grow potting mix. I think the organic was great for my raised beds (reminded me a lot of the planting compost that I got from my local building supply), but I’m definitely going to make a point of finding the regular stuff for my pots.

I still had time after spreading the soil, so I also managed to get all of my cold weather seeds planted yesterday. Onions, lettuce, carrots, kale, shelling peas, radishes, beets, scallions, broccoli raab, and sugar snap peas. Part of me thinks it feels super early, but then the part of me that has been fighting the urge to plant for WEEKS is super excited. Today we’re having a really lovely rain, so I know all those new seeds are waking up and super happy out there right now. I can’t wait to see seedlings emerging in a week or two!
